Summary
In the period 1956-1961, 81 cases of solitary round lesion in the lungs were observed
in the Lung Department of the University Clinic in Oslo. The clinical diagnosis was
tuberculoma in 29 cases, malignant pulmonary tumour in 36 cases and benign pulmonary
tumour in 16 cases. On the basis of the radiological picture, bacteriological, cytological
and histological investigations, or by other method, definite or extremely probable
preoperative diagnosis was made in 32 of tile ,81 cases. In 8 cases with definite or
probable tuberculoma thoracotomy was not carried out. The remaining 73 cases were all
operated and a histological diaginosis was made. On the basis of our experience with
these cases we consider that solitary round lesions should be removed operatively. This
point of view also generally applies to cases of tuberculoma, unless there are special
contra-indications.
